About

Detroit has long been a beacon of Black excellence, resilience, and cultural innovation. From its role in the Underground Railroad to the rise of Motown, Detroit has shaped American history in profound ways. The city was a crucial hub for Black workers during the Great Migration, fueling its automotive industry and fostering a thriving Black middle class. Landmarks like the Birwood Wall, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, and Black Bottom’s legacy serve as testaments to the city's dynamic history.

Corktown, Detroit’s oldest neighborhood, is proud to celebrate Black History Month by honoring the contributions of Black leaders, artists, and entrepreneurs who have shaped the community. From historic Black-owned businesses to the creatives redefining the city’s future, Corktown recognizes that Black history is Detroit’s history - one of strength, innovation, and perseverance.

This February, we invite everyone to explore, reflect, and support Black voices in Corktown and beyond. Stay tuned for events, spotlights, and opportunities to celebrate together!
