Q&A with Richard I. Chatman, MDVC
What makes Metropolitan Detroit Veterans Coalition special?
Our coalition of Veterans and patriotic citizens are uniquely qualified to showcase how patriotism binds diverse communities and to keep the public forever reminded that all veterans fought or served to preserve peace, liberty and democracy for our country.
Why Corktown?
The MDVC has hosted the Detroit Veterans Day Parade for 14 consecutive years in Downtown Detroit. Last year (2019) was the first time we staged our parade in Corktown and it was a huge success. Our participants were thrilled to be marching in honor of our Veterans and Military through Detroit’s oldest neighborhood, past the sight of old Tiger Stadium and in front of the train station. The MDVC executive board voted unanimously to make the IBEW Local 58 and Corktown the permanent staging site for all future Detroit Veteran Day Parades and to become a member of the Corktown Business Association.
How has the CBA impacted your business?
This is our 1st year but we anticipate only positive things will happen for the MDVC with our association with the CBA.
What are you looking forward to next year for Corktown and for your business?
We are so thrilled to be part of the growing and development of a dynamic Detroit neighborhood. Forming associations and friendships with likeminded Detroiters and Michiganders who want to continue the success and rebirth of one of America’s great cities. We anticipate our annual Detroit Veterans Day Parade and Armed Forces Event to become a premier showcase for honoring Veterans and our Military.
What are some goals or upcoming announcements for Metropolitan Detroit Veterans Coalition?
Our 15th Annual Armed Forces Salute will be held Sunday Nov 8, 2020 in Corktown. This year we will be saluting our Female Veterans. Our Parade Grand Marshall will be City Council President Brenda Jones and our Keynote Speaker will be Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
