Folk Detroit supplying neighbors and hospital workers with local groceries

In mid March 2020, in response to the COVID19 pandemic, Folk transitioned its full service restaurant into a neighborhood marketplace. Open for curbside pick-up, customers can purchase online at folkdetroit.com for same day or future scheduled curbside pick-up. The take-out menu is a small selection of offerings and deli style grocery add-ons such as side salads and dips as well as daily quiche. The marketplace will offer a selection of fresh bread, produce, local meat, dairy, eggs, dry goods such as beans, grains, limited paper and eco-cleaning products, beer and wine and snacks. We offer curated farm and pantry boxes and ready to heat meals. Our freezer will offer a selection of seafood by MINK, gelato, fruits, frozen meat pies, soups and more.

How have you as a business been affected by coronavirus?

I've indefinitely laid off 8/10 staff. Lost income but created new revenue streams.

What has the CBA's response been to support its businesses?

Incredible. I can't say enough about how much Bob has supported us all through this is the leader of the CBA. Excellent communication, requests for info, up to date resource info and more!

How did you become involved in the Ford Fund essential worker delivery program? What have been some highlights?

Bob reached out to ask if we were still operational and interested. I was so tired at the time I wasn't sure I could manage it. But with the assistance of Jessi and the thought that none of us could possibly be as tired as out Healthcare worker's it was a no brainer to participate.

Where have you seen your community step up to support these or other efforts?

Supporting local initiatives. Feeling safe and supported by local business that are open and operational, if able to be as safe as possible and provided trusted goods.

How can supporters of Corktown support the community now?

Envision the future Corktown they want to live in, walk freely in, activate in, enjoy and florish in. Then continue to support the neighbors and small businesses they want to see in that future. We can not do this alone. We sometimes feel IN IT alone, federal funding and other resources are running out, inaccessible or simply DO NOT make sense to many of us. We need the support of those who can and want to see us here tomorrow and the next and the next and may more after that.

What services do you have going on now? How can people help you? What do you want to promote?

The Farmer's Hand (TFH) in 2016. TFH was established to provide access to healthy local food and beverage primarily located within Michigan as well as support farmers by returning higher profit margins directly back to their pockets. Folk was opened in 2018, right next door -- a local neighborhood cafe offering healthy fare inspired by the seasons. Most importantly, paying our staff non-tipped far higher than minimum state wages.
