Corktown, Detroit’s oldest neighborhood, is proud to celebrate Black History Month by honoring the contributions of Black leaders, artists, and entrepreneurs who have shaped the community. From historic Black-owned businesses to the creatives redefining the city’s future, Corktown recognizes that Black history is Detroit’s history - one of strength, innovation, and perseverance.

Joyell Lewis, Owner of Joyola Mei Salon
Joyell Lewis is the owner and lead stylist of Joyola Mei Salon, an eco-conscious salon located at 1432 Michigan Ave in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood. Specializing in wavy, curly, textured, and coily hair, the salon offers a range of services, including haircuts, color treatments, extensions, and styling, all while emphasizing the use of sustainable and eco-friendly products.
Fred Hunter: Leading Detroit PAL
Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL) has long been a pillar of youth development in the city, using sports, mentorship, and leadership training to positively shape the lives of young Detroiters. At the helm of this mission is Fred Hunter, a dynamic leader dedicated to expanding opportunities for Detroit’s youth and strengthening the connection between community, law enforcement, and athletics.
All Things Marketplace
Jennyfer Crawford-Williams is known as the Queen of Small Business Advocacy and founder of Ask Jennyfer & All Things Detroit.
All Things Marketplace is a vibrant retail and community space located in Detroit's historic Corktown neighborhood. Founded by Jennyfer Crawford, the marketplace began as an online platform to support small business owners and artisans. In 2020, it expanded to a brick-and-mortar location at 1620 Michigan Ave., Suite 123, providing a physical venue for local entrepreneurs to showcase their products.
